Crowns of Beauty (Black Hair)

Black beauty,

why ever would you hate your crown?

So much so that you press it down.

Kill’n it with chemicals

Frying it with hot combs

Sewing in their hair so we look more like them

Then snapshot the world that “BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL”

WE label it “bad hair”

Reinforcing the idea that our one of our most distinguishable
traits…is something to be disdained.

For our crowns are unique.

We can shape them. Mold them. Braid them up high and low.

Our crowns transformed become beautiful works of art.

They taught us to hate it

Not because it wasn’t beautiful

But because it WAS

The way our hair rose upon our head

And sat ever so perfect

Perfect like the crown it is.

Your crown commands attention.

Reminding them that we are indeed royalty….

Why do you think they always want to touch it? Why do you
think they stare at it in awe?

See….

They MADE crowns to sit on their heads,

but we…

WE were born with them.

I ask again,

BLACK BEAUTY…

Why ever would you hate your crown?
